Authorities arrest suspects in Griffin Street crimes

The Eastman Police Department, along with the State Fire Marshall’s Office and the Dodge County Sheriff’s Department, arrested six people in connection with the criminal activity that occurred in the Griffin Street area in Eastman. The subjects were arrested for the arson of the Boutwell home and the Thomas Realty Company on Griffin Street. Also solved was the robbery of the 17 year old female at the Precision Car Wash along with the burglary and theft of an automobile from James F. Kimmons Certified Public Accountants(CPA) Office.

Wreck ends Amber Alert for four year old

A three vehicle accident quickly cancelled an Amber Alert that had just been released for a four year old child that had been allegedly abducted from her grandmother’s home in Americus by her mother.

Business is burglarized, set on fire

On Saturday, May 11, 2013 The Thomas Realty Company located at 220 Griffin Street received damage to the building when a fire was set and the building was burglarized. All the computers were reported stolen. The fire was extinguished before extensive damage occurred. This is under investigation by the state fire marshal’s office, the Eastman Fire Department and the Eastman Police Department.

Authority appoints officers, tempers flare

Tempers flared at the Monday, May 13, 2013 meeting of the Dodge County/Eastman Development Authority after chairman Jack Burnham called the meeting to order. After the invocation, board member John Jessup made a motion that the meeting agenda be changed to include election of officers for 2013.

Authorities seek murder suspect

Law enforcement officials are looking for a suspect(s) in the murder of an Eastman man at an apartment in a house at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Page Street. A family member found the body of Gregory Scott Giddens, age 51, on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at approximately 7:47 p.m. and called 911.

Hilliard named Conservationist of the Year

Governor vetoes Pruett’s legislation

Airport authority votes to sell Ocmulgee river property for second time

The Heart of Georgia Regional Airport Authority held a called meeting on Monday, April 30 at 2:00 p.m. and approved the sale of the 45 (plus or minus) acres of land on the Ocmulgee River for a second time. The authority had previously voted to sell the property, but before the bids could be opened, a judge signed a temporary restraining order keeping them from doing so.

Boy with brain tumor inspires marathon runner

Jonah Barnett, a young boy from this small town in Georgia has become the inspiration for a runner headed to the 14th annual St. Jude Country Music Marathon & 1/2 Marathon presented by Nissan, which takes place on Saturday, April 27. Jonah, who was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumor as a toddler, has motivated Eastman resident Kelly Burch to train for and complete her first marathon, a 26.2-mile endurance race she compares to Jonah’s medical trials.

Alcoa adopts Industrial Boulevard

Alcoa calls the period between April 21st and June 21st as GreenWorks because this timeframe includes Earth Day, National Arbor Day and World Environment Day. The Alcoa Architectural Products facility in Eastman celebrated Earth Day on April 22, 2013 by picking up the trash along the one-mile Industrial Blvd. This was the first of what will become a quarterly schedule by Alcoa employees to keep Eastman litter free by adopting Industrial Blvd. City Manager, Bea Edge, City Council members and Judy Madden, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce attended the dedication along with several Alcoa employees.

Law enforcement to take back unwanted prescription drugs

On Saturday, April 27, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. the Oconee Drug Task Force, Dodge County Sheriff’s Office, Eastman Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its sixth opportunity in three years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to the Oconee Drug Task Force at 327 Pearl Bates Avenue in Eastman. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
