The farthest away this year was Texas, that’s correct, they told me they had heard about “Peaches to the Beaches” two years ago and planned on coming every year. These people were bragging on our town of Eastman and that made me feel good. Except, the same day that these people from Texas was bragging on our town, I talked to several others and they were telling me how citizens of our own town were complaining about the extra crowds and the traffic it caused.
It is my opinion, that is the one reason we can’t draw any more new business to Eastman and Dodge County. Instead of complaining, why can’t more people join together and make it something to promote our city and county more? I mean our downtown businesses, for the most part, are not even open on Saturdays. So why can’t some of the business owners get some of their inventory and set up along the by-pass and sell and promote their business and help promote other businesses in town?
After all, we should be proud of our downtown! We are one of the few towns that have buildings with some type of business in them; not like a great deal of towns our size. I know it would work because there was one downtown merchant that did this and had a great two days doing it.
Why are there so many self-centered people running this town? If it does not benefit them or their pocketbooks they want no part of it. I even heard, mostly out of town visitors, saying they wished their hometowns had an opportunity like Eastman has with “Peaches to the Beaches” coming through each year. Instead we have a large group wishing it would go away.
We should be taking every chance we have to promote Eastman and Dodge County. We can’t even get over our own town’s selfish feelings toward one another to work together. Why does a tragedy have to happen for everyone to work together? Yes, let a bad storm or a fire or something like that to happen and everyone comes together to work. But, when it comes to gaining a business or industry, everyone is afraid someone will get the credit or make more money than him or her.
So, I ask, please instead of trying to end one of the last things we have going for us, please let us all join together next year and make it great for all of us! Downtown merchants and other businesses could make flyers, at the least, advertising their stores and I would love to hand them out in our yard.
My family and I host an official site and we charge to set up in our yard. Everyone we had set up this year, including five from out of town (one from Moultrie), already want to come back next year and we had three more that expressed interest to set up with us next year. We were sending all these people and others to do business in town while they were here and it was very embarrassing when they would return and tell us all the negative they heard in town.
My family and I, along with other vendors, had a great time!
